Thermal Barrier Coating

Picture
Enviroseal Spray Foam brings you thermal barrier coatings in Morgantown, WV, and neighboring areas. These services are ideal for use in enveloping industrial buildings for increased energy efficiency and use on metal components that operate under high thermal conditions.

When operating at extremely high temperatures, the structural material of critical components may be at risk for degradation. Using thermal barrier coatings enhances performance and increases durability by protecting these components from heat. It also increases performance output and accuracy in the manufacturing sector.

Enviroseal offers you a variety of thermal barrier coatings to choose from to help you protect your assets and extend the operating life of critical components.

What are Thermal Barrier Coatings?

Cost Thermal Barrier Coating
Thermal Barrier Coating, also known as TBC, is a highly advanced system used on metals in gas turbines and aviation engines that operate at extremely high temperatures. TBC is excellent for use in managing exhaust heat.

Typically, thermal barrier coatings contain four main layers:

  • Metallic Bond Coat- This layer accommodates residual stress
  • Ceramic Top Coat- It has a high melting point and low thermal conductivity
  • Metal Substrate- Protects underlying metallic parts from corrosion and erosion
  • Thermally Grown Oxide, TGO- Plays a role in the spallation of the ceramic layer from the bond coat

Thermal barriers are also ideal for protecting component parts up to 3,000°F. Industrial firms use these coatings to manufacture parts that must function in high temperatures from less expensive substrates without compromising performance.

The most common thermal barrier coating material is yttria-stabilized zirconia, YSZ, which is resistant to thermal shock and fatigue up to 1150°C. It is applied via electron-beam physical vapor deposition, EBPVD, and plasma spraying.

Some thermal barrier coatings contractors also use HVOF spraying for applications that need resistant properties.

Requirements of Thermal Barrier Coatings

In addition to low thermal conductivity, TBCs must be lightweight. They must also be able to withstand large stress variations as the components alternate between heating and cooling or even thermal shock.

TBCs must also be chemically compatible with the underlying metals they are sprayed on as well as the thermally grown oxide. They should also be able to operate in an oxidizing environment.

In the dynamic industrial environment, TBCs must also provide thermal insulation to any underlying superalloy engine components. They should also have strain compliance to effectively minimize the stress impacted by thermal expansion mismatch on the superalloy components.

Which is the Best Thermal Barrier Coating For You?

Install Thermal Barrier Coating
Thermal barrier coatings differ in characteristics and reactivity. When choosing the best solution for your needs, we consider a variety of factors including the optimal process for component geometry as well as the material it is made from.

Benefits of Thermal Barrier Coatings

Some of the advantages of using thermal barrier coatings include:

  • Thermal barrier coatings are developed to shield metal and alloy parts from the extremely high temperatures typically found in industrial buildings. High temperatures increase fatigue on the components causing wear and tear and degradation which compromises output.
  • Using thermal barrier coatings, the components are shielded from the heat. TBC makes the component wear-resistant and increases its strength to withstand high temperatures.
  • Thermal barrier coatings also reduce the stress caused by extensive exposure to heating which causes thermal oxidation.
  • Using thermal barrier coatings on industrial buildings also helps increase energy efficiency by preventing cool air from escaping. This application also extends the life of HVAC units which can be expensive to replace in big industrial buildings by reducing their usage.
  • Thermal barrier coatings are also environmentally friendly. At Enviroseal, we take great care to use coatings with low volatile organic compounds to ensure we keep you and your team safe.

Parts That Use Thermal Barrier Coatings

Thermal barrier coatings are typically used on metal alloys, metallic substrates, and other composites.

TBCs also provide thermal insulation to superalloy engine components such as rotating blades, nozzle guide vanes, combustor cans, blade outer air-seals, ducting, and stationary guide vanes among others. These coatings can also be used on the tail section of jet engines.
